अमेरिकी भूगर्भ सर्वे के मुताबिक, शुक्रवार को मध्य सुलावेसी के डोंग्गाला कस्बे में आए इस भूकंप की तीव्रता 7.5 थी। यह तीव्रता इस साल की शुरुआत में लोमबोक द्वीप में आए भूकंप से कहीं अधिक थी, जिसमें सैकड़ों लोग मारे गए थे।
खुले में हो रहा इलाज
भूकंप के बाद पालू के अस्पतालों में इस समय घायलों की संख्या इतनी बढ़ गई है कि बहुत से लोगों का इलाज खुले में किया जा रहा है। इंडोनेशिया के राष्ट्रपति जोको विडोडो ने बताया कि त्रासदी वाली जगह पर मदद के लिए सेना को बुलाया जा रहा है। खबरों के मुताबिक, इस तबाही में हजारों घर और अन्य इमारतों को नुकसान पहुंचा है, जिसमें एक 80 कमरों वाला होटेल भी शामिल है। इसके अलावा कुछ मस्जिदों, शॉपिंग मॉल्स आदि के गिरने की भी खबर है। सावधानी बरतते हुए पालू एयरपोर्ट को शनिवार शाम तक बंद रखने का आदेश भी दिया गया था।
जश्न के वक्त आया भूकंप
करीब साढ़े तीन लाख की आबादी वाले शहर पालू में शुक्रवार को सुनामी की 1.5 मीटर (पांच फुट) ऊंची लहरें उठी थीं। कई लोगों के शव समुद्र तट पर नजर आए। आपदा एजेंसी ने बताया कि उस रात वहां समुद्र तट पर कोई जश्न होना था और लोग उसी की तैयारियों में लगे थे। फिलहाल वहां और शवों की तलाश जारी है। एक व्यक्ति को समुद्र तट के पास एक छोटे बच्चे का रेत से सना शव निकालते देखा भी गया था।
इंडोनेशिया की भौगोलिक स्थिति के कारण वहां भूकंप का खतरा हरदम बना रहता रहता है। दिसंबर 2004 में पश्चिमी इंडोनेशिया के सुमात्रा में 9.3 तीव्रता का भूकंप आया था। इसके कारण आई सूनामी के कारण हिंद महासागर क्षेत्र के कई देशों में 2,20,000 लोग मारे गए थे।
