Dehradun : Booknerds, the Dehradun-based book discussion community, came together on Sunday for the fifth edition of their avant-garde event, Banned and Controversial Books Hangout.
Booknerds Banned and Controversial Books Hangout is an annual event that channels the freedom to read and campaigns for books that have been banned or deemed controversial worldwide.
The Booknerds community gathered at The Blue Door, a luxury homestay in Dehradun to read and discuss such books and presented their argument for and against the case for the freedom to read.
Booknerds co-founder Rohan Raj started the session with a brief history of the Banned and Controversial Books Hangout and introduced the four lead discussants and the books selected for the session.
Philip Burrett, ex master The Doon School,mentor, motorcyclist and avid reader, Keerti Sheoran, entrepreneur, and storyteller, Gautam Agrawal, agribusiness owner, and Dr Sunil R. Parab, Associate Professor at Doon Institute of Medical Sciences served as the lead discussants for the session and took turns in talking about the shortlisted titles – To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh, The Protocols of the Meetings of the Learned Elders of Zion by Victor E. Marsden, and Aurangzeb: The Man and the Myth by Audrey Truschke, respectively.
A passionate conversation on the freedom to read brought forth contrasting opinions and new perspectives between the attendees.
A well-rounded argument was presented from multiple points of view that summed up the group’s thoughts on the matter.
The engaging chat was followed by an exchange of banned books recommendations, a tour of The Blue Door and a concluding conversation over tea with the attendees.Booknerds co-founder Neha Raj felicitated the discussants and the venue partner with book hampers and concluded the session with gratitude for all attendees.
